Every patient has the right to have his/her rights respected without regard to age, gender, disability, race, color, ancestry, citizenship, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, medical condition, marital status,, payment source, or any other basis prohibited by local law.

Patients’ Bill of Rights

Rights&responsebilitiesAs a patient of the Tony Thwaites Wing, you have the right, consistent with law, to:

  • Receive considerate and respectful care in a clean and safe environment free of unnecessary restraints
  • Be informed of the name and position of the doctor who will be in charge of your care in the hospital
  • Know the names, positions and functions of any hospital staff involved in your care and refuse their treatment, examination or observation
  • Receive all the information that you need to give informed consent for any proposed procedure or treatment.
  • Refuse treatment and be told what effect this may have on your health
  • Privacy while in the hospital and confidentiality of all information and records regarding your care
  • Receive an itemized bill and explanation of all charges
  • Complain without fear of reprisals about the care and services you are receiving and to have the hospital respond to you and if you request it, a written response
  • Provide a list of  family members and other adults who will be given priority to visit
  • To wear appropriate personal clothing and religious or other symbolic items, as long as they do not interfere with diagnostic procedures or treatment

Patient Responsibilities

In addition to the above rights, a patient has certain responsibilities once admitted to the Tony Thwaites Wing. These will be presented to the patient in the spirit of mutual trust and respect. Patients are expected to:

  • To provide accurate and complete information concerning his/her health status, medical history, hospitalizations, medications and other matters related to his/her health
  • To ask questions when there is a lack of understanding
  • To follow the plan of care established by his/her physician, including the instructions of nurses and other health professionals as they carry out the physician’s orders
  • To be responsible for his/her actions should he/she refuse treatment or not follow his/her physician’s orders
  • To assure that the financial obligations of his/her healthcare care are fulfilled as promptly as possible
  • To follow facility policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • To be considerate of the rights of other patients and facility personnel

Patient Visitation Rights

Visiting hours are between the hours of 10 am and 12 noon; and 4pm and 8pm daily. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed on the patient floors. The hospital dress code is strictly enforced. The hospital reserves the right to change the visiting hours for cause without notice and in case of emergency.
The Tony Thwaites Wing recognizes the importance of family, spouses, partners, friends and other visitors who offer support during the patient’s stay. The Wing acknowledges that patients who receive services from our facilities have the following rights:

  • To be informed of their visitation rights, including hours of visitation, restrictions or limitations of their visitation rights
  • To receive visits from your attorney, physician or clergyman at any reasonable time
  • To speak privately with anyone he/she wishes (subject to hospital visiting regulations) unless a doctor does not think it is medically advised
  • To refuse visitors

Patients must  give written permission for visitation for public relations purposes, any media representatives and photographers must contact the hospital spokesperson for clearance and access to the hospital.
